Environmental red flags have gone up in the Chilean Lake District as Endesa and the Chilean Government plan the construction of two electricity generating plants in the region, with a combined capacity of 600 MWs. and a total investment of U$600 millions. The system would be regulated from Lake Pirehueico and plants would be built near Neltume and Choshuenco.
It is not yet clear where exactly the plants would be built but in all likelihood indigenous land will be expropriated and communities displaced. For better or worse the area may never be the same.
